What do you think of JK Rowling?

As a straight feminist woman concerned about the rights of ALL my sisters, Rowling became a total piece of human garbage and I wish she’d read Simone de Beauvoir.

I think she's been damaged by something in her past. It's the only conclusion I can come to for her being so obsessed with other people's genitals and who goes in public toilets which she's too rich to ever use. It's very very weird. Also, she's given far too much political influence for a woman who admits sitting in coffee shops all day whilst out of work rather than actually looking for a job. She needs to repay her benefits rather than funding bigotry. Or maybe if it really is about womens rights she could speak up about the pregnant women being shot in their bellies by IDF snipers. That would be a worthwhile life's work rather than targeting the 0.01% of British society just trying to get by.

TL:DR she's a hateful POS that thinks everything is all about her. She can get in the bin 🗑️

How do you balance keeping up with global politics and caring for your mental health in a 24/7 digital world? Where and how do you find hope?

How do you maintain your friendships over long distance and multiple timezones? It seems to get increasingly hard in my 30's to find a balanced investment in both old and dear relationships and keeping my heart (and schedule) open to new ones!

Long podcast-style Telegram voice messages.

None of my closest friends are proximally near me. I have multiple individual friendships with friends I've had for decades, across country borders, time zones, and life's mountains. We've maintained our connections because we make the effort to fit into our lives the ability to listen to each other and respond in kind. It takes a mutual willingness to be dedicated to each other because we deeply love and value each other.

It also takes the respect needed to give each other space and grace to let our lives be lived. This can result in many days or weeks between messages, and yet, invariably we always circle back and catch each other up on the activities keeping us going forward. It's been about wanting to pay attention, wanting to love, and wanting to openly, deeply share our truths with each other.

How do you balance your health issues with having to work? Even though I’m self-employed, my industry is so cutthroat that if I fall sick for prolonged periods, my clients will leave. Even the implication that you’re sickly is enough at times.

I love your take on things - fresh, insightful and always so, so sharp with humour.

Being disabled and a woman, I'd love to know how you feel about the challenges of intersectionality and the ways various societal and systemic discrimination just pile on until we're so overwhelmed we can't fight back! How can we retain our power and stay positive? When we know ourselves and our bodies, but aren't listened to, and are dismissed - what tools do we have (metaphorical or otherwise) to find the wherewithal to step up and believe in ourselves as we defend our right to live happy, healthy, and mentally free lives?

Lots there - take what you might and use it as you will 😉

Okay, it’s petty, but I think it every time you mention The Good Place & Ted Danson. Never Kristin Bell. Spill that tea!

How do you fight low self esteem? How do you fight the feeling of thinking nobody likes you?

Joanna Carr's avatar

Please look into the work if Kristin Neff on self compassion. You deserve love and respect simply because you exist. You deserve to show yourself love despite any sucesses or failures just because you are you. Self esteem is contingent on acieving something whereas self compassion just is - you get to give it to yourself at all times.

Hi Jameela, the state of our world in 2025 is deeply worrying. Human rights are under attack. Climate change accelerates. Authoritarianism grows. And change is happening too slowly — or not at all. Many people are starting to feel powerless. How are you not becoming fatalistic? Do you have any advise on how to stay sane while still following the news?

We are organizing a citizens-led festival Show Up For Humanity, 20 sept Brussels for +_ 40k attendees and our main goal is to spark some hope, make empathy sexy again, just simply to bring people together as a first step towards more action. Do you have any message for our audience?

I have a nerdy question. You’ve mentioned having ED, mental health issues, and I am wondering if they got in your way when you were making The Good Place. In the US, as an employee, you would be entitled to disability related accommodations under the ADA. Did you ever approach the need for more rest, or more flexibility while shooting as an accommodation?

What’s it like to be an outspoken critic of the culture that is at the foundation of the industry you’re in? If that makes sense? And do other famous people ever engage in conversations with you (one on one) about diet culture, healthism, etc.? Do they ever push back and defend their biases or say “hey I hadn’t thought about how I’m complicit in this”/this shit sucks thanks for helping make these things more transparent?

Hihi! I have so many questions for you it's hard to narrow it down to just one!

But if I had to, I guess I would ask you what you do when your mental health and your physical health are butting heads and getting in each other's way. I'm currently going through physical therapy and it's so hard to not let my mental illness get in the way. I'm trying to do it daily but I have executive dysfunction, pretty severely, to the point where some days I barely do anything besides eat potty and sleep. Thank you for your thoughts on the subject, sending love from Denver 💋

How can men best show up for "you"?

I just finished reading your last post, The new "IT' girl is here.

A great read I highly recommend to all.

Some men really enjoy women or any person who are independent, doesn't give a fuck, and are who they are. Some men appreciate independent thinkers and the kind of freeness you describe being needed more in the world.

Yet, those same men probably know and understand that men, the misogyny, and patriarchal society has led to all the issues you point out as well.

For those of us who know this, how can we best show up?

How can we support this shift of focus that is wasting so much energy and is generally unhealthy for all while still being associated with the root of the problem?

The duality of us wanting to offer our approval for this positive behavior and support it along with our approval not being at all needed as men is not lost on me.

I understand this answer is different for everyone, so, just answer it for yourself and those of us reading along can interpret the best we can.

Thank you for all you do!
